Cumberland County Jail Roster Overview
The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office runs the county's only detention facility and publishes an active inmate roster online. Sheriff Johnathan Morgan oversees the Cumberland County Detention Center, located at 131 Dick Street in Fayetteville. The roster lists people who are currently booked and held at the jail. It updates as staff enter records into the system, so it reflects the current population in close to real time. The primary search page is the Sheriff's Active Inmate Lookup, which embeds the search interface directly on the page.
The roster only covers the Cumberland County Detention Center. It does not show people held in state prison, federal custody, immigration detention, or facilities run by other counties. Once a person is transferred to the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction after sentencing, they leave the county roster and become searchable through the state offender database instead. For recent bookings, keep in mind that the system may lag several hours behind an actual arrest while booking is completed.
The Sheriff's Office notes that the roster is provided under N.C.G.S. 132-1.4, which governs law-enforcement records. Some information is not subject to public disclosure under state law and will not appear on the site. If a record is absent and you believe a person should be listed, call the Information Desk at (910) 672-5630 or (910) 672-5622 for live confirmation.

How to Use the Cumberland County Inmate Roster
The active inmate search tool is available at the Sheriff's Active Inmate page. You can also go straight to the direct search URL at cumberlandsheriffnc.gov:8000/active_inmates/Inmates.aspx. The form is simple. Last Name is the only required field. Enter it, hit Submit, and the system returns a list of matching active inmates with their arrest date and a link to more details. The screenshot below shows the direct search form as it appears on the Sheriff's system.
The screenshot below comes from the direct Cumberland County active inmate search portal.
The form shows a placeholder mugshot, two name inputs, and Submit and Reset buttons. Results include the arrest date, full name, and a More Details link for each match.
- Go to the Sheriff Active Inmate Lookup page or the direct search URL.
- Type the person's last name in the Last Name field. This field is required. You can also add a first name to narrow results if the last name is common.
- Click Submit. The page will reload and show a list of all active inmates whose name matches your entry, along with their arrest date.
- Scan the results list. Each row shows a Date Arrested, the inmate's name, and a More Details link. If there are multiple pages of results, use the pagination links to move between them.
- Click More Details to open the full inmate profile. That page shows additional booking information, charges, and other record fields captured at intake.
- If the person you are looking for does not appear, they may not be in active custody, or their booking may still be in progress. Call the Information Desk at (910) 672-5630 to confirm.
Note: The Sheriff's page says the site is not an official replacement for court records; for case history and charges, check the court records through the NC eCourts Portal.
Roster Search Fields at Cumberland County
The active inmate search form is designed to be straightforward. It accepts two name inputs. Last Name is the only required field, marked with a red asterisk on the form. First Name is optional and is useful when a last name is shared by many people. There are no booking-number, date-of-birth, or charge-type filters available in this public portal. If you get too many results with a common last name, add the first name to filter the list.
| Field Label | Type | Required | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| First Name | Text | No | Optional; maxlength 20 characters; narrows results when last name is common. |
| Last Name | Text | Yes | Required; maxlength 40 characters; marked with red asterisk on the form. |
| Submit | Button | n/a | Submits the search and loads matching active inmates. |
| Reset | Button | n/a | Clears both name fields and resets the form. |
What Cumberland County Inmate Records Show
A search returns a result list that shows each matching inmate's arrest date, full name, and a More Details link. The list also has pagination if the search returns more than one page of results. The visible result fields were confirmed by a live search on May 26, 2026. The More Details link opens a full inmate profile page. That detail page experienced a system error during the research pass for this record, so the table below covers confirmed visible fields from the result list and the standard booking data the Sheriff's intake process captures for every person booked into the Cumberland County Detention Center.
| Field | What It Shows |
|---|---|
| Date Arrested | The date the person was booked into Cumberland County custody; visible in the result list for every inmate. |
| Name | Full name of the inmate as entered during booking; displayed in Last Name, First Name format in the result list. |
| More Details | Link that opens the individual inmate profile page with deeper booking data. |
| Mugshot | Photograph taken at intake; a placeholder image appears on the search form; the actual photo loads on the detail page. |
| Booking / ID Number | Assigned at intake; this is the county booking ID that also appears in the GettingOut.com system under a different number used for mail. |
| Charges | Criminal charges or offenses recorded at booking; captured as part of standard intake alongside warrant checks. |
| Bond / Bail Information | Bail amount or release conditions set by a magistrate or judicial official during intake; may show cash bond, secured bond, or no bond depending on the charge. |
| Classification / Housing | Housing assignment given after classification review; unit depends on custody level and other criteria set at booking. |
Because the detail page postback returned a system error during the research pass, fields beyond the result list are based on the booking process described on the official Detention Center page. Verify current field availability by visiting the roster directly.

Booking Process at the Cumberland County Jail
Understanding the booking process helps explain why a person may not appear in the online roster right after arrest. After an arrest in Cumberland County, a person is not always taken straight to the jail. They may first go to a local police station for interviews, paperwork, or reports. DWI arrests often require breath or blood chemical testing before jail commitment. The Sheriff says pre-booking at these locations can take four hours or more. During that window, nothing will appear in the online inmate roster because the person has not yet been processed into the detention center.
Once the person arrives at the Cumberland County Detention Center, intake begins. The Sheriff says the full intake and booking process takes four to eight hours on average. That window covers several steps that all happen in sequence: medical screening, mental health screening, identification checks, warrant checks, search for contraband, photograph, fingerprints, computer entry of the record, bail determination by a judicial official, and court-date setting. Only after computer entry is complete will the person appear in the active inmate roster. Some people are released during or right after intake, either because they make bail or because the matter does not require jail hold. Intoxicated individuals may be held up to 24 hours or longer until it is safe to release them.

Sheriff Morgan has served with the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office for more than 28 years and became Operations Commander before taking over as Sheriff when his predecessor retired in 2025.
After intake, people who do not make bail are assigned housing based on classification. The classification process reviews criminal history, charge type, physical and mental health factors, and other criteria to determine which part of the facility is appropriate. The active inmate roster reflects their current status once classification and computer entry are complete. Bail is set by a magistrate or other judicial official during intake. The magistrate line is (910) 672-5610 for questions about initial appearance and bond conditions.
Visitation Hours at Cumberland County Jail

Each on-site visit allows two adults and one child, or one adult and two children. Cell phones are not allowed inside the facility unless the Jail Administrator has approved them. Visits are monitored.

Sending Mail to Cumberland County Inmates
Personal mail to inmates at the Cumberland County Detention Center changed on June 26, 2023. The facility stopped processing personal mail on-site. Letters, cards, pictures, and drawings are now handled offsite through ViaPath Technologies. ViaPath scans incoming mail and sends it digitally to the recipient inside the jail. Any mail sent to the old facility address will be returned to the sender. Use the ViaPath mailing address below instead.
The screenshot below comes from the official Cumberland County Sheriff inmate mail page.
The mail page walks through the ViaPath process and explains how to find the correct ID number to put on the envelope.
The mailing address for all personal mail is:
ViaPath Mail Address for Cumberland County Inmates
Cumberland County Detention Center, NC
Inmate Name and GettingOut.com ID Number
P.O. Box 247
Phoenix, MD 21131
One important detail: the ID number on the envelope must come from GettingOut.com, not from the county booking ID shown on the Sheriff's website. The booking ID used inside Cumberland County's system is different from the ID that ViaPath uses. To find the right number, log in or create a free account at GettingOut.com, go to Contacts, select Cumberland County Detention Center NC, search for the resident by name, and use the Booking Number shown there as the ID Number on your envelope. Writing the wrong number can delay delivery.
Inmate Property at Cumberland County Detention Center
Property handling at the Cumberland County Jail follows a standard process from the moment a person is booked. At intake, all personal property is inventoried and placed in self-seal tamper-resistant plastic bags. Any cash is taken out of the bag and put into the inmate's jail account. That account can be used for commissary purchases and other permitted uses inside the facility. Any money left in the account at discharge is returned to the person on release. Before leaving booking, inmates exchange their personal clothing for jail-issued clothing. The personal clothing is bagged and stored securely until the person is released. Basic hygiene items are provided free at entry.
If you have questions about a specific item, the Sheriff says to contact the arresting agency first. The jail's property rules are posted on the inmate property page. Additional deposit options for inmate funds are available through jailpackstore.com, listed in the jail's quick links. Unused funds in the commissary account are returned to the inmate upon discharge.

The property page explains how items are stored at booking, how the inmate cash account works, and when property is returned at release.
What the Cumberland County Roster Does Not Show
The active inmate roster only reflects people currently held at the Cumberland County Detention Center. It does not cover every person with a connection to the Cumberland County criminal justice system. Knowing what the roster excludes helps you look in the right place. Under N.C.G.S. 132-1.4, certain law-enforcement and criminal investigation information is not subject to public disclosure. The Sheriff's site says information that is not disclosable under state law is not accessible through the site and can only be provided by court order. Accident reports are also excluded from the inmate site and must be obtained through NCDMV.
- People transferred to the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction after sentencing; search those records through the NC DAC Offender Search.
- Federal inmates held by the U.S. Marshals Service or the Bureau of Prisons; search those through the BOP Inmate Locator.
- People held in other counties, even if their charges originated in Cumberland County.
- Immigration detainees held by ICE facilities, which operate separately from county jails.
- Arrests still in the pre-booking phase at a police station or under a DWI chemical test hold.
- People booked but released before computer entry was completed, meaning they may never appear in the roster at all.
For victims who need release notifications, the NC SAVAN service through VINELink covers county jail inmates, state prisoners, probationers, parolees, and registered sex offenders and sends alerts by phone, email, text, or TTY.
